Summer Slam 2016 Recap

Carmella, Becky Lynch, & Naomi vs. Natalya & Alexa Bliss

Nikki Bella! I did not see that return coming. She joins Alexa and Natalya.

I really enjoy the Women’s division because they are so much more fluid. The reversals seem natural, and there is a certain grace to a lot of what they do. Don’t get me wrong, these ladies do not lack power, but I really appreciate how smooth they are.

I really enjoyed this match. Very fun.

Nikki, Alexa, and Natalya win.

My prediction: Carmella, Becky Lynch, and Naomi win.

My score: 0/1

The Miz vs. Apollo Crews

Intercontinental Title Match

The MIz came out very aggressive, which I liked. Crews came out ready to perform as well. The dude has some serious skills. He’s crazy athletic and I think he has a bright future.

The Miz Wins

My prediction: The Miz wins.

My score: 1/2

Enzo and Cass vs. Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens

Enzo and Cass got all of their New York quotes in for their pre-match speech. Not their best but still pretty good.

This match was on from the first bell, lots of action, definitely  a good way to open the show.

I really like Kevin Owens. He is such a great heel. He knows when to mock his opponent, when to press, and when to lay his personality on thick. This match was proof positive that he’s the best heel in the game right now. Which makes me wonder why he’s being wasted in a tag team with Chris Jericho.

Jericho and Owens win.

My prediction: Jericho and Owens win.

My score: 2/3

The New Day vs. Gallows and Anderson

WWE Tag Team Championship Match

Jon Stewart was the honorary member of The New Day for the match. Umm, ok. But the match started off with The New Day in full control. Gallows and Anderson regained a few moments of control but then Woods got the hot tag and cleaned house.

Big E returned just in time to save Jon Stewart from getting a severe case of Ringpostitis.

Gallows and Anderson win by DQ. The New Day remain champions.

My prediction: Gallows and Anderson win.

My score: 3/4

Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte

WWE Women’s Championship

These two are so good  Just top-notch. Up until the point where Charlotte almost killed Sasha by accident. Holy crap, that was horrific.

There was a stretch in the match where everything was sloppy, which is very unlike these two.  When they get in the ring together I expect nothing but the best.

After this point though it was all on. Sasha somehow reversed a Super Razor’s Edge into a Hurracanrana, that almost paralyzed her. Which led to a punch-fest in the middle of ring.  This was followed by a very deserved “This is awesome” chant.

Sasha delivered a double-knee from the top rope to the mat outside of the ring, wow. Just so good. Sasha also countered Natural Selection into the Bank Statement, which was incredible. This stuff doesn’t happen in men’s wrestling.

The end of this match was so quick and surprising. Charlotte countered the Bank Statement into a pin and got the 3 count. Wow, what a match.

Charlotte wins.

My prediction: Sasha wins. Though this is the match I’m most unsure of.

My score: 3/5

Rusev vs. Romam Reigns

US Championship Match

Rusev was unable to compete because before the match began he attacked Roman and got beat down big time by Roman. So this match never took place, which is an absolute joke. What a waste.

My prediction: Reigns wins.

My score: since this match never officially happened I am not counting it towards my score. 3/5.

John Cena vs. AJ Styles

AJ finally got his blues to match!

The beginning of this match was slow but that was to be expected I think. You can’t have a marathon match if you start at full speed. The only detractor to this match was that I could see Cena and Styles talking to each other multiple times. Usually guys that are this experienced and that have wrestled each other multiple times are far better at hiding the communication.

That being said, these guys did not disappoint with their performances. Styles gave Cena a brutal suplex on the apron and Cena responded by tossing Styles a good 12 feet in the air, both of which landed very hard. There was also a nice submission interchange towards the end of the match that changed the pace of the match.

AJ had a great combo for a near fall. He pulled off a springboard frankensteiner off the top turnbuckle and then hit a Phenomenal Forearm but of course Cena kicked out because he’s Superman.

Styles nailed a HUGE Phenomenal Forearm to finish Cena off. This was a great match. I’m really happy that Styles won clean.

Styles wins.

My prediction: Styles wins.

My score: 4/6

Dean Ambrose vs. Dolph Ziggler

WWE World Championship Match

After watching the pre-match promo I’m beginning to doubt my prediction of Ambrose winning.

Ziegler started the match very aggressively. Ambrose did a great job of keeping his cool and then taking over.

The middle of the match was a little slower than I had anticipated. There was a lot of dead time in between moves and the camera man definitely caught them having a conversation, whoops.

The ending of this match was terrible. I’m completely disappointed.

Ambrose wins.

My prediction: Ambrose wins.

My score: 5/7

Finn Balor vs. Seth Rollins

WWE Universal Championship Match

I didn’t write a thing while I watched this match. I was way too into it.

I said in my predictions that this match had the potential to be the match of the year. Let’s be clear, it was not. I don’t even think it was the match of the night but it was still a very good match.

When Finn kicked out of the Pedigree I jumped off my couch because that’s when I knew he was going to win. The ending to this match was very, very good.

Finn Balor wins and become the first ever WWE Universal champion.

My prediction: Balor wins.

My score: 6/8

Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Orton

This was a complete waste of time. Absolutely a joke. Orton got cut and the ref called the match. All this build up for a circus? What an absolute disappointment. What is WWE doing?

Lesnar wins by TKO.

My prediction: Lesnar wins.

My score: 7/9

Show Grade

C+.

There were good matches, Sasha vs. Charlotte comes to mind, but the way the show ended was an absolute dumpster fire. The Reigns vs. Rusev match that never happened was terrible and the Orton vs. Lesnar debacle was a travesty, just an absolute waste of time and money. Seriously, what was WWE thinking here? Any PPV that ends on such a terribly sour note should get a much worse grade, but because the beginning of the show was so good I'm willing to give it a barely passing grade of C+. I had such high hopes, and the card was so good. Yet I'm still disappointed. What a waste.
