The Best Ending To Raw That I’ve Ever Seen
Scroll to the Matches section to get a more detailed view of how the Main Event ended but then come back up here for my thoughts on why this happened and what is next for everyone involved.
Triple H is the king. He vanishes after Wrestlemania, just poof, gone. No one knows if or when he’s coming back to the main roster. Shane returned, ending the Authority storyline, Stephanie turned face, and the focus became all about who would run Monday Night Raw. Throw in a brand split, a draft, and a few months and frankly I just assumed that Triple was done in the ring and was focusing his energy on NXT and WWE Creative.
I think a lot about where the storylines are headed, who may return or debut, and what surprises WWE might try and pull but in all of that guessing I never thought this would be how he returned. It was marvelous. I was shell-shocked, just absolutely floored. In a span of about 5 minutes Triple H turned WWE upside down.
This turn took 2 years of storyline, excluding Rollins’ time off to recover from an injury, and blew it up, like a 4th of July fireworks display. Owens could barely believe it himself and the look on Rollins’ face when he looked up at Triple H from the corner, you could see the joy and celebration already going on in his eyes. To top it off, Foley looked pissed and Stephanie didn’t even know how to function.
They sold this turn PERFECTLY.
So where does this leave us?
Gosh, I don’t know, so many options moving forward. So as it stands, Owens is with Triple H and Seth is with Stephanie and Mick. I’m assuming Jeri-ko is dead in the water and I’m completely fine with that.
Why did Triple H turn his back on his wife and Seth Rollins? Is he mad that he wasn’t made GM of Raw? What’s the motive here? I’m eager to find out how they play this.
Also, I saw a picture this weekend on Twitter of Owens, Triple H, Finn Balor, and Hideo Itami all flashing the ‘Too Sweet’ sign. Is Triple H going to join his 4th faction? Where does this leave Gallows, Anderson, and AJ Styles? Or am I reaching here?
The other thing here, who are the bad guys? Owens has been a heel ever since arriving in NXT and he’s incredible at it. Triple H has been one of the best heels in WWE history…but so has Stephanie McMahon. The fans love Owens and Triple H and they love to hate Stephanie. Also, Rollins has been a heel ever since he betrayed The Shield 2 years ago. (By the way, he’s been a central figure in the 2 biggest turns in recent memory.)
So again, who are the bad guys? Or perhaps the more pertinent question is, who are the good guys?
I hope that this finally results in a face turn for Seth Rollins. That would be fun. But are WWE really going to go with Stephanie, Foley, and Rollins as good guys and Triple H and Owens as bad guys? That seems too simple. There has to be more to this and I think the motivation for this turn will let us know where this is headed.
I cannot wait for Raw in the coming weeks.
PS. WWE passed up Rollins twice for the Universal Championship and given it to new guys. I find this very, very interesting and proof that things are changing in WWE.
PPS. Do WWE use this to unite Reigns and Rollins against a common enemy? Doubtful, but I did have that thought.
Things of Note
- The promo to start off the show was just a bit longer than I would have liked but it did do a good job of setting up the Main Event. Making Roman look like the guy to beat was a smart move because it immediately gets the crowd on his case, causing the real ending of the match at the end of the night to go over even more massively than it already would have.
- Bayley plus The New Day is fantastic.
- Paul Heyman tried to pay Lesnar’s $500 fine in all singles…hahaha, and he got away with it. Though they did potentially lay the groundwork to make Brock Lesnar the centerpiece of a Raw vs. Smackdown winner take all match in the future.
- Who was the guy in the suit looking at his phone when Seth was talking to Foley and Stephanie? There’s no way that was some random dude. I didn’t get a good look at his face though.
The New Day and Bayley vs. Gallows, Anderson, and Dana Brooke
Dana Brooke got a ‘too sweet’ salute. Are we expanding The Club?? Probably not yet, but back to the match. This was a lot of fun. Dana still has rough spots but everyone else was on point.
Bayley and The New Day win
Cesaro vs. Sheamus
(Sheamus leads the series 1-0)
Most of this match was typical except for one moment. Sheamus flipped Cesaro over his back onto the apron and the ring post. It looked nasty.
Sheamus wins and takes a 2-0 lead in the series.
Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns vs. Big Cass vs. Kevin Owens
Fatal Four Way Elimination Match for the Universal Championship
The intro to this match took forever…and then they took a commercial break, uggghhh.
The match started with a big build for Reigns and Cass. Cass’ big boot over the top rope is so killer. After that, each guy got in their spot outside the ring and led to another freaking commercial.
WWE gave Cass so much time to shine in this match. He is definitely on the rise, poor Enzo. What are they going to do with him?
First Elimination: Big Cass.
He took a Superman Punch, a Super Kick, and a Frog Splash before being pinned.
Huge Power Bomb/Super Plex combo between Reigns, Rollins, and Owens after ANOTHER commercial. The Reigns vs. Rollins section that followed was really, really good. Owens spent this section lying on the mat, which was smart, you can’t lose if you don’t get pinned…just let the other two beat each other up.
This match got better and better as it went on. Huge moves from all three guys, repeatedly. So much fun.
HOLY CRAP! Triple H is back!!! What is happening? After Reigns destroyed Owens and Rollins outside of the ring, Triple H came out of nowhere and Pedigreed Reigns.
Second Elimination: Roman Reigns.
Triple H threw Owens in the ring right after Reigns was pinned and then walked over to Rollins and tapped him on the face, as if to say, “Alright, let’s get this thing done.” AND THEN HE PEDIGREED SETH ROLLINS!!! OH MY GOD, I CAN’T FEEL MY ARMS RIGHT NOW, THIS IS AMAZING!
Third Elimination: Seth Rollins.
Winner and NEW Universal Champion: KEVIN OWENS
This is the best thing I’ve seen since I came back to wrestling in November. Just the absolute best. I can’t even believe it right now. I cannot wait to see where this goes. WWE Creative you have NAILED IT. This is what I hoped the New Era would be like. And it’s Kevin Owens! I’m in heaven. Finally he got the push he deserves.
Maybe the best ending to Raw ever? I missed a lot of them, so I may be wrong, but it’s definitely the best ending to Raw that I’ve seen.
