WWE Battleground Predictions
WWE Battleground is tomorrow. Here are my predictions for all the matches.
Charlotte and Dana Brooke vs. Sasha Banks and mystery partner
First of all, who is Sasha’s mystery partner? My genuine hope is that it will be Bayley. This would be a really fun way for her to make her Main Roster debut. If her debut happens this way, WWE could keep her floating between the Main Roster and NXT for a while, like they did with Kevin Owens for a few months last year. She would get a huge pop from the crowd and it would serve as a great way to further the feud between Charlotte and Sasha, culminating in a match at Summerslam.
I’m not convinced WWE will do this. I think they will have NIa Jax be the mystery partner. But with the same outcome, a Charlotte vs. Sasha match at Summerslam for the WWE Women’s Championship.
My prediction: If the mystery partner is Bayley, I believe that Banks and Bayley win clean. If the mystery partner is Nia Jax, I think Charlotte and Dana win but with some controversy, as that’s the only way the WWE seems to book Charlotte’s wins.
The New Day vs. The Wyatt Family (Six Man Tag)
This match should have a lot of hype around it. They filmed a brutal fight at some southern swamp just to push the rivalry into new territory for WWE. But then the draft happened and as far as we know the Wyatt Family is no more. So I ask, why push the best potential feud in recent tag team memory hard for a month only to break up one of the teams days before there first PPV match? It doesn’t make sense right now, and it may never.
I have hopes that Luke Harper will come back from injury and rejoin Bray and Rowan on Smackdown, but I have no proof that this will happen. For a match that I was genuinely looking forward to because of where the storyline could go, I no longer care that much, which is a shame.
My prediction: The New Day wins.
Cena, Enzo, and Cass vs. The Club (Six Man Tag)
This is an interesting match due to the implications of the draft. Cena and Styles are both on Smackdown and the other 4 are all on Raw. I see this match as a setup for matches at Summerslam: Cena vs. Styles and Enzo & Cass vs. Gallows & Anderson.
I think this match will be fun to watch. Each guy brings something to the table here, and we should see a lot of big spots. Cena vs. Styles, Cass vs. Gallows, Enzo getting the crap beat out of him for a hot tag, John Cena ‘never giving up’ again, and lots of interference/brawling on the outside.
My Prediction: Cena, Enzo and Cass win. Something goes wrong between AJ and Gallows/Anderson, involving Cena, and we see the beginning of The Club moving on from AJ. This also sets up Cena vs. Styles at Summerslam.
Becky Lynch vs. Natalya
This match has the potential to be really good. I’m a Lynch fan and would love to see her win clean here but I’m not confident in WWE’s booking of her to say that will happen. I expect Natalya to pull some shenanigans because all of the sudden she’s become evil.
My prediction: Natalya wins and we continue to feel bad for Becky.
Kevin Owens vs. Sami Zayn
This has the potential to be the match of the night and completely steal the show. These two have been wrestling with and against each other for years, they are incredibly good together, and their in-ring chemistry is fantastic. Plus, I really like both guys, so I’m personally looking forward to seeing this one.
They’ve kept billing this fight as the final showdown between the two but obviously that’s not the case, both guys were drafted to Raw, with Owens being taken super late. I bet they use this angle, coupled with the result of the match, to set up the real final showdown at Summerslam because the WWE isn’t afraid to over-indulge on a story line.
- Owens wins clean and uses this win to haunt Sami for the next month, never interfering but just showing up distract Sami during his matches leading up to their rematch at Summerslam.
- Zayn wins clean and Owens absolutely loses his mind, going on a month-long rampage until he gets to ‘set things straight’.
I genuinely don’t know how they are going to play this one, which is yet another reason why I think this will be the match of the night.
Rusev vs. Zack Ryder (US Title Match)
I don’t care a lick about this match.
My Prediction: Rusev wins.
The Miz vs. Darren Young (IC Title Match)
This match will be a good one to watch. Darren Young is athletic and fun and I actually really like The Miz. Plus we might get a Bob Backlund/Maryse spot during the match which could potentially be hilarious. This is classic Babyface vs. Heel and I expect a quality match from these two.
I’d like to see The Miz win clean, but that’s a rare occurrence these days, WWE have been relying on Maryse’s interference a lot.
My Prediction: The Miz wins and retains the title leading into a feud with Baron Corbin or Del Rio.
Ambrose vs. Rollins vs. Reigns (Triple Threat for the WWE Championship)
I have mixed feelings about this match. I’m really excited for it because all three of these guys are great, but I’m afraid that it won’t be booked to its full-potential. Admittedly, I have no inside view into what WWE is going to do here, I just get a sense that the way this match will play out won’t be fulfilling.
I realize that this match is just another in a years-long Shield storyline that is bound to continue between Reigns and Rollins but I want this match to mean something because we’ve been waiting for it for so long now. For that reason, I hope that this match brings the roof down. Each guy has the talent to make this one a match to remember, I just can’t help but think we’ll be disappointed by it.
A lot of my back and forth feelings about this match stem from not knowing what WWE is going to do with Roman Reigns. If he turns heel during this match then I think my concerns are immaterial and the match will be fantastic. Imagine Reigns teaming up with Ambrose at the beginning of the match to take out Rollins (perhaps in a modified version of the old Shield Triple Powerbomb) and then in their moment of celebration Reigns Superman Punches Ambrose and proceeds to beat the living tar out of him, culminating in a new finishing move, signifying his transition to heel and becoming the bad guy.
A man can dream, right?
My Prediction: Ambrose retains the title, pinning Reigns for the win. Rollins pisses and moans Monday night on Raw that once again he was robbed, that he never lost, and that he wants a shot at Ambrose, one on one, at Summerslam. Foley then announces that he won’t get a rematch against Ambrose, but rather, there will be a month long tournament amongst Raw talent for the new World Heavyweight Championship, which leads to Rollins vs. Reigns at Summerslam.
I anticipate this PPV to be mostly about setting up Summerslam, which is fine, but it means we need to temper our expectations. This is not going to be on-par with last month’s Money In The Bank, but Summerslam should be fantastic.
What I find most interesting about this PPV is it’s timing. It’s stuck in limbo between the WWE Draft and the first broadcasts of the new Raw and Smackdown. So there isn’t a whole lot they can do here, other than setup storylines for Summerslam in the big picture, and show-specific feuds for the small-scale.
You would imagine that a Championship has to switch hands at Battleground but I don’t think one will. The only way I see this happening is both the US and IC titles change hands, which would effectively be a show swap. But this makes Smackdown look like little brother again with the ‘more important’ championship going to Raw.
Obviously it remains to be seen how the show will go. Check back here for a full recap of Battleground on Monday and be sure to comment with your predictions.
